Résumé
In rural North India, young women face numerous challenges as they consider prospects for their future. Expectations from family, school and society point them sometimes towards jobs, sometimes towards higher education, sometimes towards social service, and almost inevitably towards marriage. Educational opportunities vary in quality and reputation, including a push for English education. This presentation will focus on the life stories and aims for the future expressed by a group of Kumauni young women and the role of language in their attempts to negotiate various expectations and opportunities.
